NATCHEZ — Cathedral High School picked up its first softball win in Mississippi Association of Independent Schools in dramatic fashion.

Tied 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Marty Lewis hit a dribbler between the pitcher and the first baseman, scoring a runner from third to give Cathedral a 3-2 win against Amite School Center.

“It was great,” head coach Gary Blackwell said. “We haven’t been able to practice a whole lot, and I was just hoping we would play good and figure out what we needed to work on. To get the win was great, though. I saw a lot of good hustle out there.”

Cathedral totaled seven hits in the victory against Amite. Abby Brown and Elizabeth Smith each recorded doubles in the win for Cathedral.

Smith got the win inside the circle, striking out five, walking two and allowing six hits to get her first victory of the season.

“Elizabeth did a great job,” Blackwell said. “She got into a bind in a couple inning but battled her way out. She pitched really well.”

Cathedral (1-0) will travel to play in a tournament at Amite School Center Saturday.
