NATCHEZ — Services for Gordon Monroe “Peewee” Hughes Jr., 71, of Vidalia, who died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at his residence after a lengthy battle with cancer, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Abundant Life Church with the Rev. John Collard and the Rev. Rayford Ables officiating.

Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday, both at the church.

Mr. Hughes was born June 26, 1944, in Natchez, the son of Gordon Monroe Hughes Sr. and Ruby Lee Brazell Hughes.

Mr. Hughes proudly and selflessly served and defended his country in the U.S. Navy Sea Bees as well as the Louisiana National Guard. He served two tours of duty, Vietnam and Desert Storm, in his 27 years of service before retiring. He loved his country and was a proud American.

He also worked for the U.S. postal service as a rural mail carrier for 26 years before retiring. He loved meeting his customers and enjoyed serving them by delivering their mail daily. He was a faithful member of Abundant Life Church for more than 20 years.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his mother and one brother, Michael Wayne Hughes.

Survivors include his father of Vidalia; his loving and devoted wife of 50 years, Barbara Elizabeth Brown Hughes; three loving children, two daughters, Lisa Ann Hughes Coley and husband, Kevin, of Vidalia, and Tina Marie Hughes Huff and husband, Chris, of Wildsville; and one son, Michael Lee Hughes and wife, Kate, of Harrison, Ark.; six precious grandchildren, Kyle Coley, Kaylee Coley, Cash Hughes, Landon Hughes, Sway Huff and Orry Huff; one brother, William Glen “Bill” Hughes and wife, Janet, of Vidalia; two nephews, Tance Hughes and wife, Lesley, and Seth Hughes, all of Vidalia; and a number of other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Jay Dantzler, Tance Hughes, Seth Hughes, Jay King, Jody Perrault and James Doughty.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Dantzler, Glen Petty and Sid Gowens.
