WOODVILLE — Caleb Poole was responsible for four of Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s five touchdowns — three on offense and one on defense — as the Rams turned away the River Oaks School Mustangs 35-7 Friday night.
“We came out ready to play. River Oaks is a really good ball club. I told the kids, ‘Don’t look at their record. Look at the team we’re playing.’ They’ve played some good teams,” WCCA head coach Christopher McGraw said.
Poole had touchdown runs of 20 and 48 yards and threw to Hutch Holden on a 2-point conversion pass for the Rams. A 56-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Pommier to Will Sherrill and Elan Jaff’s extra point for River Oaks were sandwiched between those scores.
But even that 8-7 score at the 5:54 mark of the first quarter would be the closest that River Oaks would get to having the lead. Poole’s second touchdown of the first quarter was the start of a 21-0 run for WCCA that lasted well into the third quarter.
Steven Franks scored on a nine-yard run with 6:43 remaining in the second quarter. Then Poole took over in the third quarter as he scored on a two-yard run and scored on a two-point conversion run and then picked off a pass and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown with 1:52 left. Sam Nicholas tacked on the extra point.
In addition to what Poole did on the ground, Kyle Folds added 72 yards on 13 carries as the Rams’ running game racked up 239 yards.
“We ran the ball well. We completed one pass (two, actually). I don’t like to throw the ball. I like to do what’s working,” McGraw said. “Caleb is starting to come around. I moved him to quarterback the last two games so he can move around.”
Kevin Folds had seven carries for 15 yards and Franks finished with 13 yards and the touchdown on four carries. McGraw said the hard thing with having three good running backs to compliment Poole is the number of carries each one gets from game to game.
“All three backs are really good backs,” McGraw said.
Not only was the Rams’ running game imposing, so was its defense. River Oaks was held to 162 yards of total offense and eight first downs and turned the ball over four times.
“The defense starts with the front. All five played their hearts out,” McGraw said. “They played their assignments well. We were physical from the first snap.”
Hutch Holden and Luke Littleton had seven tackles each. Both Poole and Drew Skinner had an interception. Calob Reed and Jordan Palmisano each had one fumble recovery.
WCCA (5-2) will next play on the road against Porter’s Chapel Academy in an MAIS District 5-AA game Friday at 7 p.m.
