Ridgecrest — One of two Concordia Parish inmates who apparently climbed one prison fence and went under another to escape Monday was captured Tuesday evening because he needed to charge his cell phone.

Michael W. Parker, 22, 1036 Louisiana 922, Jonesville, was recaptured at the park at the corner of Pear Street and Ferriday Drive in Ridgecrest after Concordia Parish Sheriff’s Office Investigator John Cowan was able to track a cell phone Parker was known to use, Concordia Parish Correctional Facility Warden’s Assistant Sheila Spinner said.

“He was using the electricity at the park to charge his phone, and when they pinged his phone they were able to pinpoint his location and zoomed in and got him,” she said.

Arrested with Parker was a juvenile female, who was charged with obstructing justice and assisting him in escape.

Also charged in the incident was Tina R. Smithhart, 33, 167 Ralph Road, Vidalia, who was booked into the Concordia Parish Jail on charges of obstruction of justice, assisting after the fact to simple escape, possession of schedule II substance and possession of schedule IV substance.

Parker, along with fellow inmate Christopher Higginbotham, 22, was first discovered missing from the CPCF around 9 p.m. Monday.

Spinner said prison officials believe the two climbed over one prison fence by covering the security wire with a prison uniform, though blood found on the uniform indicates one of them was cut anyway.

After clearing the first fence, the two apparently removed the ties connecting the second fence themselves — or had some help removing the ties — and climbed under the fence, where officials believe a vehicle was waiting for them, Spinner said.

Security camera footage shows a vehicle entering and leaving the area at approximately the time the two were believed to have escaped, she said.

Higginbotham still remains at large, and Spinner said the chase team from the Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola would be getting involved in the search.

Higginbotham, of Ferriday, is a white male, approximately 5-feet-9-inches tall and weighing 153 pounds. He has short brown hair, hazel eyes and a tattoo inside his left arm that says, “Tiffany.”
