OLLA, La. — The Block High School Bears finally got the monkey off their backs with an impressive display of offense and a stout defense that paved the way for a stunning 28-12 win over the LaSalle High School Tigers Friday night in the LHSAA District 3-1A opener for both teams.

LaSalle jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the first quarter before Block went ahead 8-6 in the second quarter and took that lead into halftime. The Bears took control of the game with a 20-point third quarter and didn’t allow the Tigers into the end zone until late in the fourth quarter.

“The second half was kind of a JV game. I put a lot of young players in,” Block interim head coach Bo Sproles said. “First district win. My first win as a head coach and one that I’m proud of.”

Kelvontae Scott led Block’s rushing attack with 121 yards on 16 carries while Aaron Bell had nine carries for 92 yards. Zorian Bowie had his best game under center as the sophomore quarterback completed seven of 10 passes for 103 yards with no interceptions.

“We started out kind of sluggish. But the run game was fantastic. Tae Curry had a good game. Aaron Bell broke a couple of long runs. We threw the ball for a bomb to Anthony Barber Jr. for 52 yards,” Sproles said.

Barber ended up with two catches for 72 yards and Jacob Duncan had one reception for 18 yards. Sproles said the defense played good, but missed a few tackles.

Other than the two touchdown drives, LaSalle (4-2, 0-1) had a tough time moving the ball on the Bears’ stingy defense.

“Both teams played hard. Both teams showed a lot of class and character,” Sproles said. “Hope to keep the ball rolling next week at Northwood.”

Block (1-5, 1-0) travels to Lena, La. to take on Northwood-Lena in a district match-up next Friday at 7 p.m.
