NATCHEZ — Services for Dr. Barthel D. Waggoner, 83, of Natchez, who died Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015, will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church with the Dr. Doug Broome officiating.
Burial will follow at the Natchez City Cemetery under the direction of Laird Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the church.
A native of Forkville, Waggoner was the son of Claud Ellery Waggoner and Mary Grace Irby Waggoner.
He was a graduate of the University of Southern Mississippi where he received a bachelor of science degree in education. He also received his master’s degree in education from Mississippi College and his doctorate in educational psychology from Mississippi State University.
Waggoner was a teacher, speech therapist and school psychologist in public schools of Mississippi, Nevada and Alaska, and a faculty member of the School of Education and Psychology at Alcorn State University. He also served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Waggoner was a member of First Baptist Church in Natchez.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, William Ernest Waggoner, Byron Claud Waggoner and Frederick Neal Waggoner.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jacqueline Morton Waggoner; two children, Barthel Sean Waggoner and wife, Christy, of Natchez and Kimberly G. Waggoner of New Orleans; and two grandchildren, Mason A. Waggoner and Bailey Grace Waggoner, both of Natchez.
Pallbearers will be George Pirkey, Dustin Powell, Michael Baroni, David Smith, Carter Austin and Billy Guthrie.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mason Waggoner.
