NATCHEZ — What could your nonprofit do with $200,000?

Erik Eaker, director of Humana Inc., said the answer to that question is “a whole lot.”

The Humana Foundation, based in Louisville, Ky. and acting as the philanthropic arm of Humana Inc., will award a $200,000 grant to an Adams County nonprofit next month.

The one-time grant will be awarded to a nonprofit that is using a social support network to promote community health in and around Natchez.

“I would encourage any organization interested in the well being of their fellow residents to apply for this,” Eaker said. “Hopefully though this grant, the community can create additional workforces to solve some of its own (health) problems.”

The foundation, which focuses on improving community health, announced in a press release that an expressed need exists in Adams County for behavior change initiatives for individuals at risk for chronic (health) conditions.

“We are excited about this opportunity to support the Natchez community and its goal to build a culture of health for everyone,” said Virginia Judd, executive director of the Humana Foundation. “The foundation is committed to the well-being of the people and the communities we serve.”

Social networks, Eaker said, can be loosely defined as any program that gives peer support when striving to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

“One of the hypotheses is that the local community knows best how to solve their own problems,” he said. “Our goal is to help them do that (with the grant). It’s difficult to get anything started without some seed money.”

Applicant qualifications can be found at humanafoundation.org. Deadline for applying is Nov. 6.

The grant recipient will be announced sometime the same month, Eaker said.
