Candidate qualifying ends in parish

VIDALIA — At the end of qualifying for municipal elections, every Vidalia and Ferriday official up for re-election except one Ferriday alderman have a challenger.
Qualifying ended after three days on Friday.
Vidalia
In the March 5 election, Vidalia Mayor Hyram Copeland will face off against a fellow Democrat, Buz Craft.
District 1 Alderman Tron McCoy, a Democrat, will face Joseph “BoBo” McCoy, who has no party affiliation, while District 2 Alderman Vernon Stevens Jr., a Democrat, will face challenges from Democrat Robert Lee Gardner Jr. and Republican Raymond Murray.
In District 3 — which selects three representatives — incumbent Republican Jon D. Betts and independent alderman Ricky Knapp and alderwoman Mo Saunders will have to vie for votes against Republican challengers Sabrina Dore and Tommy Probst.
Vidalia Police Chief Arthur K. Lewis, a Democrat, will face off against independent candidate Joey Merrill.
Ferriday
The Ferriday mayor’s race has four Democratic candidates, Gene Allen, Justin Conner, Ruth Gray and Sherrie “Ms Mac” Jacobs.
District A Alderwoman Somer Lewis Lance, Republican, will see a challenge from former Alderman Glenn Henderson, Democrat.
District B Alderman Elijah “Steppers” Banks is competing with another Democrat, Chryl Smith Lee.
In District D, independent Alderman Johnnie Brown has two competitors for the seat, Democrat Andre J. Keys and independent candidate Marcus “Slim” Martin.
Independent Andrew Howard Jr. is challenging district E Alderwoman Gloria Lloyd, a Democrat.
District C Alderwoman Sandra Gail Pryor will be re-elected without opposition.
Clayton
In Clayton, the mayor’s race will be between two Democrats, Mayor Rydell Turner and Josephine Taylor Washington.
The race for police chief will be between two Democrats as well, Bobby L. Madison Sr. and Clarence “PaPa” Skipper.
The village will elect five at-large aldermen, and six candidates have qualified.
Democrats Floyd Lavon Barber, Willie “Bill” Evans, Houston Holmes, Irene Jefferson and Shannon Burns Madison join independent candidate Donna G. Keith in the race.
District 3 Justice of the Peace
Former District 3 Justice of the Peace Russell Wagoner Sr., who resigned the position earlier this year to run for police jury, will be re-elected to the office without opposition.
