NATCHEZ — Adams County has launched a telephone line for residents wanting to know if the FEMA 361 severe weather safe room is open.
Adams County Emergency Management Director Robert Bradford said Monday the shelter would be open for severe weather expected this week.
For residents to know if it is open, they can call 601-445-3525, he said.
“We have to have it staffed, and if they call and someone answers, that will let them know it is open,” Bradford said. “The staff is emergency management personnel and a couple of volunteer firefighters.”
The National Weather Service has issued an advisory that severe thunderstorms with damaging wind gusts and capable of hail could move through the area during the day on Wednesday and Wednesday night.
Some severe weather is also expected today.
The 10,000-square foot structure, which was dedicated in late November, is meant to withstand the wind force of an EF5 tornado. It is located between the Liberty Road ballpark and Natchez High School.
The shelter is only meant for short-term evacuation, and county officials have said it can be used to house those in substandard or mobile homes during a storm event.
