Weekend ticket: Jambalaya, music to headline weekend

NATCHEZ — Chilly temperatures may keep Miss-Lou residents inside this weekend. The good news is several indoor events can keep everyone entertained — and well fed.

The weather for Friday and Saturday is expected to be chilly, with the temperature highs predicted to be in the low to mid 40s. The lows are expected to be in the mid to high 20s with rain on Friday.

Temperatures are predicted to warm up slightly Sunday, with a high of 55 and a low of 45, sun and some clouds.

United Way of the Greater Miss-Lou’s 11th annual Jambalaya Cook-off

Hungry residents in search of a good time, good food and a good cause can go to the Natchez Convention Center today for the United Way of the Greater Miss-Lou’s 11th annual Jambalaya Cook-off.

The theme this year, Flags Over Natchez, celebrates the tricentennial and the culinary influences from the different countries that have controlled the city in its 300 years.

Different local teams will compete for first, second and third place, as well as other awards for best-decorated booth, people’s choice and team spirit.

Visitors can grab samples for $1 each, or a $7 lunch plate, which includes jambalaya, salad, bread, dessert and a drink. All of the proceeds go to the different local organizations the United Way supports.

The cook-off begins at 11 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

Concordia Parish Library Concert — The Malpass Brothers from Nashville

Tonight, country fans can dig out their cowboy boots and head to Vidalia for classic country tunes performed by The Malpass Brothers from Nashville.

The concert, presented by the Concordia Parish Library, is free and open to the public.

The music starts at 7 p.m. at the Vidalia Conference and Convention Center.

Friday Forum

With 2016 beginning and tax season in full swing, this week’s Friday Forum will cover a quick look at 2016’s financial outlook.

The planned speakers this week will be from Natchez Wealth Management, Ameriprise Financial Services Inc., Silas Simmons LLP and The Gillon Group PLLC.

The forum is a joint project between Alcorn State University, the Natchez Chamber of Commerce and Natchez Coffee Company. The forum begins at 8 a.m. Friday at the Natchez Coffee Company.

11th Moon Storytelling at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians

Long before Europeans set foot in Natchez, the Natchez Indians were already living and thriving in the area. The Grand Village of the Natchez Indians invites residents to travel back in time Saturday to hear the tribe’s stories, as well as those of other tribes, from the lips of local storytellers.

The free event begins at 2 p.m. and ends at 4 p.m. at the museum auditorium. For more information, contact the Village at 601-446-6502.

Natchez Art Association Watercolor Painting

On Sunday, residents ages 13 and up are invited to come to 452 Jefferson St. for a watercolor class from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Administrator for the Natchez Art Association Carolyn Weir said the class is geared toward beginners.

“It’s a nice relaxing way to spend a Sunday afternoon,” Weir said.

The classes began this month and are scheduled to continue every week until June. Cost is $5 or free for Natchez Art Association members. Memberships cost $25.
