NATCHEZ — The Adams County Board of Supervisors are expected to meet Monday to discuss fine collections and the state of the 911 dispatch arrangement between the city and county.
Board President Mike Lazarus said representatives from the Natchez Board of Aldermen would be at the meeting, during which the county will present a plan to combine the two dispatch offices into one.
“Throw money out the window,” Lazarus said. “We need something that works.”
Natchez Ward 5 Alderman Mark Fortenbery said at a previous meeting he has been transferred between offices on an emergency call, delaying contact with responders.
“I’m glad I wasn’t watching somebody get shot,” Fortenbery said at the time.
Lazarus said the county has suggested combining dispatch offices before, but Natchez Mayor Butch Brown rejected the idea.
At their Jan. 26 meeting, the aldermen were unable to discern why that may have been.
Lazarus said he is not sure whether the aldermen ever saw the proposal Brown rejected.
“Maybe we can get something out of the meeting Monday,” he said.
Mayor pro-tem Joyce Arceneaux-Mathis said she thinks the board will be receptive to the consolidation.
“The mayor didn’t want to sign (the first proposal).” she said. “I think the whole board is upset about having the two dispatch units.”
Ward 3 Alderwoman Sarah Carter Smith said she feels the county and the city should foster more cooperation.
“It’s ridiculous,” Smith said. “We need to be working together.”
The board of supervisors plans also to discuss what can be done to collect past due fines owed to the county.
Lazarus said the amount of uncollected fines might be as much as $2 million. He invited justice court officials and constables to the meeting, but did not invite Receivable Solutions, the local collection agency under contract with the county.
