NATCHEZ — This weekend’s weather might be stormy, but the area has plenty of things to do for those who are enjoying their spring break.

Friday and Saturday are expected to bring thunderstorms and highs in the low 70s. Sunday skies should clear with only a 10-percent chance of rain and high temperatures in the low 80s.

Natchez Children’s Home 200th Anniversary

Natchez Children’s Services will celebrate its 200th anniversary at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church on North Pearl Street. The event will include a performance by a children’s choir and a presentation on the organization’s history. An open house will follow at the group’s headquarters on North Union Street until 6 p.m. Admission is free.

Sidewalk sale

The Natchez Downtown Development Association plans to host a sidewalk sale all day Saturday in the downtown historic business district. Approximately 10 local shops and vendors will set up shop on the sidewalk on Main Street and Franklin Street, creating a sort of art walk for visitors and locals to enjoy.

In case of inclement weather, the sidewalk sale may be postponed until next weekend, but organizers say the event will continue if weather permits.

Children’s book reading

A selection of children’s literature about St. Patrick’s Day will be read aloud at Turning Pages on Franklin Street at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The event is designed for children ages 5 to 12 and will last approximately 30 minutes. Parents are encouraged to use the time to browse and enjoy the downtown atmosphere.

Natchez High School Alumni Day

Natchez High School will host its sixth-annual alumni day Saturday.

A community wide garage sale will take place from 6 to 10 a.m. in the gym. All proceeds will benefit Natchez High School.

A children’s field day is scheduled to be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will include flag football, kickball, bouncy houses and free food from Bilbo’s Fish Market. Inclement weather might postpone the field day or move it inside the gym.

A “Stop the Violence” rally will begin in the gym at 4 p.m. Natchez High School Principal Tony Fields said the event was in response to an alarming rate of violent crimes in the community. The rally will be followed by performances by local musicians and dancers until 6 p.m.

The highlight of the day will be a basketball game that pits NHS graduates from the 1990s against those from the 2000s. Women’s 3-point shootout begins at 6 p.m., followed by their game. The men’s 3-point shootout and game will follow.

A voter registration drive will be open throughout the day in the lobby of the gym.
