Trinity Episcopal standout plays variety of roles for team

NATCHEZ — With no seniors currently on the 2016 Trinity Episcopal roster, coach Elliot Meng has turned to the next wave of players for leadership and productivity.
And Meng believes he has that and more in junior Cole Switzer.
“He leads by example, but he’ll also let you know when he’s not pleased with you,” Meng said.
“He’s a rah-rah kind of guy in the dugout, and he’ll let them know when they’re doing good.”
Yet, Switzer serves not only as a leader for Trinity, but also perhaps its most versatile player, taking both to the mound and behind the plate in pitching and catching duties.
“Cole comes out and gives his all every game,” Meng said. “Whether that’s on the mound or behind the plate. You’d like to have him at two spots at once, because he’s a battler out there.”
The do-it-all athlete said sometimes the transition from pitcher to catcher is not a particularly easy task, but said he is more than willing to do what he can in helping the team.
“I’ve got to play wherever they need me,” Switzer said. “It’s hard sometimes, though, but you just have to keep your head down and do what you have to do.”
Switzer was quick to note the advantages in his dual positions, especially behind the plate.
“It helps me because it lets me know how to make the pitcher’s job easier,” Switzer said. “I’ve got to do whatever I can to help him out.”
Switzer’s contributions at the plate prove equally as important, batting at the top of the lineup as a table-setter for the rest of the offense.
“I have to get on base and let the rest of the lineup try to knock me in,” Switzer said.
Meng said his well-rounded junior’s best quality is perhaps just how much he wants to get better every day.
“He’s quiet for the most part,” Meng said. “He’ll get down on himself sometimes, but he’s a country boy at heart.”
Switzer said he and the Saints have been hard at work in the early going, attempting to improve as district play is set to begin at home today against Wilkinson County Christian Academy.
“We’re working to get better every day,” Switzer said. “We have to be more serious (for district) and better in the field, for sure.”
First pitch is set for approximately 6 p.m.
