LUCIEN — Funeral services for Laurie W. Dickey, 96, who died Wednesday, June 8, 2016, at her residence with her loving family by her side, will be 1 p.m. Monday at Lucien Baptist Church in Lucien, Miss, with the Revs. Chad Yarborough, Carroll Walker and Garland Boyd officiating.
Burial will follow in the Lucien Baptist Church Cemetery under the direction of Brookhaven Funeral Home.
Visitation will be 11 a.m. until time of services Monday at the church.
Mrs. Dickey was born on Sept. 24, 1919, in Franklin County, the daughter of Clarence and Leatha Byrd Wooten. On June 7, 1942, she married William Percy “W.P.” Dickey. They had three children, Brenda Dickey Grice, W.P. “Sonny” Dickey, Jr. and Marilyn Dickey Smith. She enjoyed reading, traveling, playing solitaire on her computer and spending time with her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
After graduating from Lucien High School, she attended Copiah-Lincoln Junior College and then received her bachelor of science degree in English from Mississippi Southern College in Hattiesburg. She later received her master’s degree from Mississippi College in Clinton. She began her teaching career in Franklin County and then taught in Holly Bluff. After returning home to Lucien, she taught at Bude, Lucien, West Lincoln, McCall Creek, Meadville and Franklin High in Meadville. She retired at Franklin High after teaching for a total of 37-and-a-half years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 57-and-a-half years, William Percy “W.P.” Dickey; one son-in-law, Victor “Butch” Grice; and two sisters.
Survivors are include daughters, Brenda Dickey Grice of Grapevine, Texas and Marilyn Dickey Smith and husband Johnny of Brookhaven; one son, Sonny Dickey and wife Martha of Meadville; grandchildren, Lisa Grice Crawford and husband David, Brad Grice, Trey Dickey and wife Leigh, Haley Dickey, Chris Smith and wife Brandy, and Eric Smith; great grandchildren, Maddie, Sarah, Anna Grace, Jackson, Mallory, Carter, Cameron, Gracie, Trevor and Slay; and a number of other nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
