Shovels, ribbons add to good news of the week

Golden shovels and red satin ribbons were in plentiful supply last week as officials from across the region celebrated four Natchez projects and the groundbreaking of a multi-million dollar port facility in Vidalia. As we wind down from the week’s celebrations let’s look at some of the week’s highlights:
-Vidalia High School valedictorian Ajah Williams is waiting to get back to the classroom. Less than a month from graduating at the top of her class, Williams has been at Louisiana State University earning college credit as a summer scholar. The former president of the Vidalia High student council and the class of 2016, Williams knows how invaluable staying involved in school is. She plans to do the same while at LSU. With that attitude, we know Williams will more than succeed in school and in life.
-Airplanes of all shapes, sizes and vintages circled the Concordia Parish skies Saturday as part of the annual Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 912 fly-in at the Concordia Parish Airport. The event always attracts a crowd of interested fans from across the region. This year was no exception as planes crisscrossed the Miss-Lou skies. Thanks to the organizers for providing the annual event.
-Friday and Saturday officials from the Adams County Emergency Management Office handed out hurricane awareness information and pamphlets to local residents at the Natchez Walmart Supercenter. Officials also helped residents sign up for the county’s Code Red warning service, which alerts subscribers to local weather warnings through their phones and email. Signing up more residents to this vital service may help save lives when severe weather strikes.
-The Alcorn State University Extension Service spent the weekend teaching residents how to live healthier lives. With a summer fitness fair that included a 5k walk and run, ASU staff raised awareness about obesity, medical alternatives and creating healthy habits.
As we enter another busy week, let’s remember to give thanks to everyone who is striving to make our community great.
