For the third consecutive Tuesday, the Ferriday, Natchez and Vidalia high school football teams squared off in competitive 7-on-7 action.

And for the third consecutive week, each squad showcased its full potential.

Dazzling throws, electrifying catches and strong defense was sprinkled in as well, as the three teams competed to a high level for at least 60 minutes.

“There was a lot of competition today,” Natchez quarterback Chris Scott said. “We’re out here learning how to work with each other. I was learning where my (receivers) are going to be and learning what routes they’re going to run, just trying to keep everybody on the same page.”

The 6-foot-2 signal caller guided the Bulldogs to scoring drives on six of their eight series, including a long touchdown toss to speedy wide receiver Shavoké Herrington, who scored twice and added an interception on defense.

“Once we get on the same page, we’re unstoppable,” Scott said.

The previous two weeks were played at Natchez High School, while Tuesday’s action was played at Vidalia High.

Vikings quarterback Tristan Weatherly said the scrimmages will only make his squad better prepared for fall.

“We’re just working hard, trying to get better,” he said. “We’re playing against the best athletes in the Miss-Lou.”

Vidalia beat Ferriday in its first game, 23-7, but then struggled to find a rhythm in its second contest against MHSAA Class 5A Natchez.

“We did good the first game, but we have to learn to stick to our reads,” Weatherly said. “We have to play as a team.”

Ferriday, meanwhile, took advantage of 6-foot-6 Dare Rosenthal’s imposing height, lining up the 2018 prized recruit in the slot to create mismatches against opponents.

“It feels good playing wide receiver,” Rosenthal said. “I’m trying to get my feet a little bit quicker.”

Rosenthal said he has strong growth from quarterback Ronald Williams throughout the summer, and is hopeful the whole team can carry over the momentum they’re establishing into the regular season.

“Ronald is doing great,” Rosenthal said. “It’s making our receivers better because there’s more pressure. They’re catching the balls better and not dropping balls. We just want to win.”

The three will square off again Tuesday for the fourth time this month.

Natchez will travel Saturday to Jackson to compete in the Medicomp 7-on-7 tournament against the top teams from across the state of Mississippi, and Scott said he believes his squad is ready for any challenge throw their way.

“I’m looking forward to that every day,” Scott said. “I go to sleep at night (thinking about it), and I’m just ready to go. I wish it was tomorrow.”
