Delta Charter School’s Trey Poole and Dawson Woodruff go by the nickname of the “automatic brothers.”
On Wednesday morning, the quarterback-wide receiver combo demonstrated why.
Poole connected with Woodruff on touchdown strikes on four separate occasions during a 7-on-7 competition against Briarfield Academy.
The two teams played two sessions for approximately one hour each before wrapping the day up with a series of 1-on-1 drills.
“They brought some competition, and they put us to work,” Woodruff said. “They made us work everything.”
Despite the strong connection demonstrated between Poole and Woodruff, first-year Delta Charter coach Zach Rogel said he wants to see more from his squad.
“I would say we were a little sloppy, and I think the players would agree with me on that,” he said. “We had a lot of dropped balls, and conditioning is an issue, and it really shouldn’t be … I expect them to play better, and they expect themselves to play better.”
During the first series, Poole led the Storm on scoring drives on four possessions.
The Delta Charter defense, meanwhile, limited Briarfield to just two scores.
“I saw a few miscommunications — busted assignments — but we’d rather do that right now than the beginning of September. Overall, it was a success The kids were being coached as we went along, and we saw some improvement as we went along.”
In the second session, the Poole-Woodruff combination began to heat up as they connected for three scores, including 40-yard touchdown strike.
“Me and Trey, we went to the same school (Monterey) before we came here,” Woodruff said. “We’ve known each other since we’ve entered school. We’ve just been growing up together, and we’ve been spending weekends and off days together.”
Woodruff said he thinks the chemistry the duo has established will pay off in the fall.
“You know what you’re guy is capable of and where you need to be,” Woodruff said.
Ben Davis also hauled in four touchdown passes for the Storm, with one coming from Woodruff.
Rogel said his Delta Charter squad will be back in action Friday when it hosts Adams County Christian School.
“This (7-on-7) works on the passing game,” Rogel said. “We’ve got to work on our routes, and our understanding of route concepts, how to set up a defender, and ultimately catching the ball. We have to get to back to the fundamentals, teach these guys how to properly run a route, set up a defender, then make the catch, and everything else will take care of itself.”
