Friday morning’s 7-on-7 scrimmages at Delta Charter School featured speed versus size.

The physical Adams County Christian School squad won both of the scrimmages against Delta Charter, 24-23 and 27-10.

Game 1 was tough on both offenses, in which teams were required to move the ball 20 yards for a first down, The second game went to the standard 10-yard first down.

ACCS assistant coach Matthew Freeman drew up the plays for the Rebels in the huddle. He said his team took a few series to get going Friday morning.

“Our guys came out here and looked like they were disinterested, then they turned it on and came back to win the first game and won the second game pretty convincingly,” Freeman said.

ACCS is undergoing a quarterback transition after Carlos Woods graduated and accepted a scholarship to Mississippi College. Davis Sharp took the majority of the snaps for ACCS, and Cade Wells stepped in on several series.

Freeman and the ACCS coaching staff said ACCS will flex a more physical offense and ground game during the regular season as opposed to the air-raid rules of 7-on-7 football.

“Our team isn’t built for 7-on-7,” Freeman said. “We’re a physical team with pads, and we ground and pound and run the ball a lot.”

ACCS wide receiver George Scott said the reps in 7-on-7 are still important to developing consistency on offense, even if it doesn’t mirror the game plan Adams County will run in the regular season.

“We’re very competitive, but this isn’t our type of (game),” Scott said. “We’re just now getting organized to where everybody is playing their position. In the regular season, we’ll show them how it is.”

Chris Smotherman said the team is ramping up to full speed, as it caps off the third summer scrimmage session for ACCS.

“All of our starters are out here, so we’re slowly getting the full team back,” Smotherman said. “(Scrimmages are about) chemistry.”

For ACCS, Julian Wilson caught the Rebels’ final touchdown in Game 1 to seal the win. In Game 2, Scott and Richard Conn each caught two touchdown passes.

Coach Zach Rogel said his Delta Charter squad is hitting its stride. The Storm are mimicking their midseason form, planning on watching the tape from Friday’s scrimmage next week. The earlier the better, Rogel said.

“We’re behind the eight-ball,” Rogel said. “It’s a new program, and we’re not going to have the numbers that everyone else in the district has. We’ve got to find out what we can do extra to make up for that loss of kids.”

Rogel said his team got a chance to match up with a bigger, more physical squad than past scrimmages. The first-year DCS coach said the key to competing against a physical team is to match their physicality.

“We’re letting them jam us up at the line of scrimmage, and we need to work to get off the jam and do it in a quicker manner.”

Trey Poole took the majority of the snaps for the Storm at quarterback. Poole, Kodi McGraw, Dawson Woodruff and Drake Smith all reeled in interceptions for the Storm.
