NATCHEZ — Former Alcorn State University football player Tollette “Tonka” George was shot to death late Friday night in Algiers, La.
George, a graduate of Edna Karr High School in New Orleans, spent the past five years at Alcorn State, including a 2013 campaign where he led the team in receptions with 52 for 637 yards and a touchdown.
Last season, George hauled in 22 catches for 285 yards and three scores.
George served as a member of the Braves 2014 and 2015 SWAC championship teams, and recorded a touchdown pass in the inaugural Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl in December.
George graduated from the Lorman-based campus in May.
“Tonka was a talented student and athlete,” ASU Athletics Director Derek Horne said in a statement released by the school. “The Alcorn family is deeply saddened by Tonka’s death, and we are praying for his family and all who knew and loved him.”
