Ferriday Gators catcher Makenzie Landers launched a walk-off home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to send the Gators streaking into the second round of the Dixie Debs World Series after a 5-4 win over Tennessee.
Ferriday will play a double header tomorrow, starting with Game 1 against Florida at 1 p.m.
Landers had a team-high two RBI with a double in addition to her solo home run to left-center field.
Bailey Book struck out eight batters over 4.0 innings and Brianna Henson closed out the remaining four innings of the game.
“We had some hard hit balls,” coach Rut Horne said. “It was a good game. We made three uncharacteristic errors that contributed to (Tennessee’s) four runs, and we had baserunning mistakes.”
Horne said an early rally was cut short when he sent Cassie Gonzales home and she was thrown out at the plate. Horne said it was one of several base running mistakes that cost Ferriday in the game.
“We could have blown them up in the first inning,” Horne said. “Tali Beard ripped one off the fence and got a single out of it. She rounded first and hit the deck.”
Brianna Henson was 4-for-4, Gonzales was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Jania Burns was 1-for-4 with an RBI.
