WOODVILLE — Trinity Episcopal’s fast-pitch softball team finally got to hit the field for its first game of the 2016 season under first-year head coach Fay Minor.

Wilkinson County Christian Academy’s fast-pitch softball team is under a revival of sorts with head coach Jessie Toney leading the way after not even fielding a team in 2015.

Something had to give on a hot and humid Tuesday afternoon, but in the end, Trinity Episcopal came away with an 11-7 victory over WCCA in its district opener.

“I was fired up,” Minor said. “They made a lot of mistakes, but they made up for it. I was very proud of them.”

The Lady Saints trailed the Lady Rams 2-0 after one inning of play before rallying for two runs in the top of the second inning and three more runs in the top of the third to grab a 5-2 lead.

WCCA responded with a three-run rally of its own in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game at 5-5. However, Trinity answered with six runs in the top of the fourth inning for an 11-5 advantage.

“We’re very young. They’re very young,” Toney said. “We made a lot of mistakes, mistakes that a young team makes.”

Sixth-grader Addison Jackson was the winning pitcher for the Lady Saints after holding the Lady Rams to two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jackson went all four innings.

“She’s got some back pain. She had some braces put under her teeth this morning,” Minor said. “She did extremely well. This is her first time pitching this many innings. We’re expecting some big things from her.”

Despite the loss, Toney said his players are working hard and getting better.

“We don’t have any travel players. Just in-house girls who want to play softball,” Toney said. “We’re looking forward to the future.”

Trinity Episcopal (1-0, 1-0) next plays at the Amite School Center Tournament this Saturday. WCCA (0-2, 0-2) doesn’t play again until 5:15 p.m. next Tuesday at district opponent Franklin Academy.

ACCS 3, Simpson Academy 0

NATCHEZ — Brianna Henson pitched a complete-game one-hitter and struck out 12 batters as the Adams County Christian School Lady Rebels defeated the Simpson Academy Lady Cougars 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in the MAIS District 4-AAA opener for ACCS.

Henson had a no-hitter through five innings before giving up a lead-off single to eighth-grader Olivia Douglas in the top of the sixth inning. She was backed by a defense that committed just one error.

“We played real good defensively. Brianna pitched a hell of a game,” ACCS head coach Tate Lipscomb said. “She threw a lot of good pitches. Our defense and Brianna’s pitching is what held us in there.”

The game was scoreless before the Lady Rebels broke through with one run in the bottom of the third inning against Lady Cougars starting pitcher Bailey Sartin. It remained 1-0 until ACCS scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Anna McDaniel was the only multiple hitter for ACCS as she went 2-for-3. However, Lipscomb wasn’t exactly pleased that his team only had five total hits.

“Our bats were kind of dead. We didn’t hit the ball at all,” Lipscomb said.

In addition to the 12 strikeouts, Henson walked three batters and hit three batters.

ACCS (3-2, 1-0) takes on Tensas Academy at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Amite School Center Tournament.
