NATCHEZ — Natchez Police Department officials say work on the power lines on U.S. 61 will continue until at least 7 p.m., at which time officials hope the highway will be open for traffic.
Natchez Police Chief Daniel White said that a tree fell on the power lines long U.S. 61 South near the intersection with Live Oak Drive early Tuesday morning. The tree brought power lines down low enough for a truck to hit and pull the wires down onto the highway blocking traffic, White said.
Until the lanes are cleared, traffic on U.S. 61 South is being diverted to Northhampton Road between Trinity Episcopal Day School and Live Oak Drive.
Drivers should expect delays and take precaution when driving in this area, and follow instructions by Natchez police officers on the scene.
