State poll: Trump has commanding lead among Mississippi voters

NATCHEZ — A statewide poll shows Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump with a commanding lead among Mississippi voters in a head-to-head match with Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.
Results from a poll commissioned by Y’all Politics and conducted by Magellan Strategies on Aug. 11 shows Trump with a 15-point lead against Clinton. In the poll, 54 percent of likely voters chose Trump to Hillary Clinton’s 39 percent.
When the field is expanded to third party candidates Trump’s lead drops slightly to 13 points.
Trump leads Clinton in three of Mississippi’s four congressional districts among men and women. Clinton leads Trump by a 23-point margin among likely voters from the state’s second congressional district.
Other findings from the poll include:
4Mississippi voters are pessimistic about the state of the nation. Likely voters across all geographies say that the country is on the wrong track by a 68-percent to 32-percent margin. Democrats in Mississippi believe the country is on the right track (68- to 32-percent), but Republicans in Mississippi feel the country is on the wrong track by a staggering 95- to 5-percent margin.
4Fifty-seven percent of Mississippians grade the state’s public school system as “C” or lower.
4Mississippi voters support charter schools by a 3-to-1 margin. Results show this support is strong across all demographics and in all areas of the state.
The poll was conducted by an automated telephone survey and interviewed 1,084 likely general election voters. The poll has a +/- 2.9-percent margin of error.
