Franklin County, Brookhaven to open at Copiah-Lincoln CC

The Franklin County High School Bulldogs will be looking to give first-year head coach Trey Woodard his first win when they take on the Brookhaven High School Panthers Friday night.

The game is part of the inaugural KDMC Kickoff Classic at Stone Stadium on the Wesson campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m., and Brookhaven is the host team.

While the Bulldogs will try to get win No. 1 for Woodard, the Panthers will look to avenge last year’s 20-6 loss at Franklin County.

“They’re ready,” Woodard said. “Opening our season with a 5A opponent is scary stuff. We’re just preparing for quality players, quality schemes and quality personnel. They have a quality coach (Tommy Clopton). They’re good.”

Woodard said weather has been an issue as far as his team getting practice in.

“The weather’s kind of got us. We weren’t able to finish practice (Tuesday). Special teams we’ve got to catch up on,” Woodard said.

Woodard said he has been impressed with his defense during practice, and that unit will have to be at its best against a Brookhaven team that runs a spread offense.

“They try to get their players out in space,” Woodard said. “We can’t turn the ball over. We can’t make mistakes on special teams.”
