Damarrell Leggett scored two touchdowns in the second quarter as the Brookhaven High School Panthers held on for a 21-13 win over the Franklin County High School Bulldogs Friday night.

The game was part of the inaugural KDMC Kickoff Classic and took place at Stone Stadium on the Wesson campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

Leggett scored on a 64-yard run early in the second quarter and his 58-yard touchdown reception from Sevante Quinn with 5:34 to go in the second quarter allowed Brookhaven to take a 21-7 lead into halftime. And it could have been bigger, perhaps, if not for Clay Wright’s 75-yard interception return for a touchdown that kept Franklin County in the game.

Jacob McDaniel got the nod at starting quarterback for the Bulldogs, and he completed just 10 of 36 passes for 72 yards.

Even though Franklin County won the turnover battle 3-0, the Bulldogs couldn’t contain Brookhaven’s offense.

Led by Kenneth Dixon’s 145 rushing yards, the Panthers racked up 266 rush yards and Quinn threw for 123 yards and two touchdowns on 7-of-15 passing.

De’martre Collins scored on a 16-yard run with 8:54 left in the fourth quarter, but he was held to just 41 yards on 11 carries. He also had seven catches for 42 yards.

Franklin County (0-1) plays at South Pike next Friday at 7 p.m.
