Arkansas-Pine Bluff scored a 2-point conversion in triple overtime to top Alcorn State 45-43 and earn its first win of the season.
Alcorn State rallied to score 28-unanswered points against UAPB, only to see its lead disintegrate in the final five minutes of the game.
Leading 16-14 after the half, the Braves wasted no time scoring on the second play from scrimmage on a long Jaborian McKenzie rushing score that gave the Braves a 23-14 lead.
UAPB then put pressure on the Braves after quarterback Brandon Duncan connected with John Hawkins for a touchdown, and completed a successful 2-point conversion to trim the deficit to 30-20 with 5:55 left in the game.
Without a timeout, UAPB mustered a game-tying drive, traveling seven plays for 64 yards with a successful 2-point conversion pass to Cody Swain.
Alcorn State took the first offensive possession in overtime, and quarterback Noah Johnson fumbled on the second play and turned the ball over to the Golden Lions. The fumble was Alcorn State’s sixth of the game.
The Braves were granted a chance at redemption when Daniel Franklin forced Golden Lions running back Dante McDonald to fumble and Alcorn’s LaShaun Ealey pounced on the loose ball.
UAPB then took the lead on the ensuing drive to put pressure on the Braves once again.
A Golden Lion pass interference call set Alcorn up in scoring position on the ensuing series, and Johnson took advantage, scampering in for the score from 2 yards out.
On the following drive, Johnson led the Braves into the end zone on four plays and capped it off with a touchdown, but was stopped short of reaching the end zone after keeping the ball from shotgun formation.
UAPB responded when Willie Young hauled in a 25-yard dart from Duncan over the middle for the tying score.
Duncan completed 29-of-52 passes for 505 yards passing.
Johnson was 30-for-41 with 355 yards in his first start for injured starting quarterback Lenorris Footman.
Jaborian McKenzie had 119 yards receiving for Alcron, while Young tallied 232 yards on 13 receptions for UAPB.
