NATCHEZ — Although Preston Chaney Jr. and Talisha Jenkins have been siblings for 15 years, Saturday was the first day they had the chance to get to know each other.
When The Dart landed on Little Street in Natchez, the two were spending their last few hours together before Chaney and his fiancée Jasmynn Downing headed home to Lubbock, Texas.
Chaney and Downing made the 10-hour trip to connect with his 15-year-old half-sister following the death of their father Preston Chaney Sr.
What Chaney thought was going to be a weekend filled with funeral events turned out to be a chance to get to know the half-sister he knew little about.
Saturday afternoon, Chaney, Jenkins and other family members were laughing and playing together before Chaney and Downing left town.
“Honestly, I didn’t know I had a younger sister until a couple of years ago,” Chaney said. “This is the first time I have had the chance to hang out with her — our first opportunity for quality time together.”
Chaney and Jenkins share five other siblings, but never spent any time together because they grew up with different mothers. While Jenkins stayed in Natchez, Chaney moved with his family to Jackson before moving to Texas. If he spent any time around his half-sister, Chaney says he doesn’t remember it.
Jenkins said she knew she had an older half-brother because her dad talked about him from time to time.
Recently, Chaney and Jenkins started talking on the phone, before finally meeting Saturday.
“Now, I have an older brother I can look up to,” Jenkins said.
Not long after reconnecting, hints of a friendly sibling rivalry have already surfaced.
“Before we met, I thought she was going to be like one of those little sisters on TV,” Chaney said.
Looking at Jenkins smiling he said, “Your not like Full House, just worse.”
Jenkins lunged toward Chaney.
“Sometimes I just want to punch him in the face,” she said.
