Natchez attempts to rebound on road at South Jones

Natchez High School coach Roy Rigsby said there was one looming factor jumped out to him when he watched the game film of last week’s contest against Laurel High School.

“We need to play four quarters,” he said. “We have to play a different brand of football.”
The Bulldogs (1-5, 0-2) will attempt to put a full game together Friday when it travels to Region 3-5A foe South Jones High School.

The Braves (6-1, 1-1) enter Friday’s tilt fresh off a 17-14 win over West Jones High School last week.
Rigsby said he expects South Jones to attempt to establish its running attack, with their offense based out of spread formations.

“They try to get their best athletes the ball in mismatches,” Rigsby said. “They have very good runners, and they like to highlight their runners — which are their running back and quarterback.”

Natchez, meanwhile, is attempting to notch its first win since its season opener Aug. 19 against Wilkinson County. If the Bulldogs are able to record their first win in more than two months, they will likely need a strong effort from quarterback Chris Scott.

Rigsby said the junior signal-caller has demonstrated significant strides in practice and is progressing to the first-year coach’s liking.

“He’s maturing and taking the necessary path to be the leader that we need him to be,” Rigsby said. “We discussed last week’s game and what he needs to do to become a better quarterback, and he’s doing that, and that’s what we’re looking for.”

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. in Ellisville.
