NATCHEZ — After operating with reduced hours in recent months, the Natchez National Historical Park sites will be open seven days a week.
The park sites scaled back hours because of a staffing shortage, but the recent addition of two park guides to the local National Park Service staff means the sites can return to normal hours, NNHP Superintendent Kathleen Bond said.
Bond said she is happy to see the park sites return to normal hours.
“The public owns them, and they need access to them,” she said.
The Melrose estate is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. now with an additional tour. Tours of the mansion begin at 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. The estate is located on Melrose-Montebello Parkway.
Tours are $10. Tours of the grounds and enslaved person’s exhibit are free of charge.
The William Johnson House, located on State Street downtown, offers free self-guided tours daily. The house is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The newly opened Fort Rosalie site on South Canal Street is open from dawn until dusk daily, with picnic tables close to parking. The site is open to visitors free of charge.
Bond said the park sites will remain operating with normal hours for the foreseeable future. The NPS will soon add a permanent chief of interpretation to the staff, Bond said, and will continue to monitor visitor patterns and make the most efficient use of staff time.
