The Franklin County High School Bulldogs needed a win in the worst possible way to not only salvage what has been a disappointing season, but also keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
And on Friday night they got just that. Just not the way they expected it. Port Gibson out-gained Franklin County 318 yards to 172 yards and had 15 first downs to just six for the Bulldogs. Yet it was the visiting team that held on for a 19-14 win in MHSAA Region 7-3A action.
De’martre Collins threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Xavier Green with 10:14 remaining to give the Bulldogs a 19-8 lead. D’Marious Hicks threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to James White with 5:59 to go to make it a one-possession game, but the Blue Waves would get no closer.
Collins went 4-for-5 passing for 69 yards and had 58 yards rushing on 16 carries with one touchdown. Green had three catches for 71 yards.
Franklin County (3-6, 1-2) plays host to Wesson at 7 p.m. Friday.
