In a battle of LHSAA District 2-1A cellar dwellers, the Sicily Island High School Tigers will travel to Bastrop, La., to take on the Beekman Charter School Tigers with kickoff at 7 p.m. Friday.
Sicily Island (0-7, 0-5) lost at home to Delta Charter School 15-6 last week, while Beekman Charter (1-7, 0-5) suffered a 12-8 loss at Tensas High School.
Last year when the two teams squared off at Sicily Island, the host Tigers defeated the visiting Tigers 44-14.
Beekman Charter’s 26-6 win at Northwood-Lena on Sept. 16 snapped an 18-game losing streak that started with its opener of the 2014 season.
“They’re a little more athletic than they were last year, and they have a few more players than they had last year,” Sicily Island head coach Curtis Shavers said.
Shavers said his team will have to be more focused on what it is doing when it has opportunities to score and eliminate the mental errors and penalties that hurt them last week against Delta Charter.
“We have to capitalize on them. We’ve been working on the fundamental things. Having the right plays we want to run and plays that will get us in the end zone,” Shavers said.
For Sicily Island to potentially pick up its first win of the season, Shavers said the defense needs to continue to play as well as it has in recent weeks.
“We have to play good defensively like we did against Delhi and most of the game against Delta Charter. Even with one starter suspended, our defense will be OK,” he said.
