Delta Charter School’s Trey Poole bobbed his head in rhythm to the music echoing across the school’s football field during Wednesday’s practice.
Poole and other Storm players had an extra hop in their step as they sprinted from drill to drill and displayed a high level of intensity throughout the evening.
Perhaps the reason for the added excitement is the anticipation for the school’s first playoff game Friday night.
Delta Charter, which was established in 2013, is set to travel to Homer High School for an opening round LHSAA Class 1A playoff game.
“This is definitely important,” senior wide receiver Dawson Woodruff said. “It’s our first chance as a team and as a school to be able to win our first playoff game. This is exciting. We’re facing a team we’re confident against. It’s a great feeling.”
The No. 19 Storm (3-7) demonstrated poise and composure at the practice and appeared eager to put their abilities on display against the No. 13 Pelicans (3-7).
“The beauty right now is everyone is 0-0,” DCS coach Zach Rogel said. “I feel good about our team. I feel like we are as close as of a team right now than we have been all season, and I think that speaks to these guys’ character.”
The first-year coach said his players approach each day with a positive attitude, and their mindset has left a lasting impact.
“You come in every day to work excited,” Rogel said. “They use the right language. They use the right manners, and they treat the adults with respect. That’s what you what you want to see. It’s a pleasure, it’s been great.”
Delta Charter enters Friday’s tilt playing perhaps the best it’s played all season. The Storm have won two of their past three games and have stood strong against opposing team’s rushing attacks during that span, an area Delta Charter struggled with earlier in the year. Rogel said his squad will be tested again Friday against the Pelicans.
“They’re going to try to line up and run it down your throat,” he said. “You’re either going to stop it by being in good position or you’re going to take it.
“We bowed up and stopped it last week. We’ve got some guys in new positions. We’re ready for the challenge.”
Offensively, Woodruff said he thinks his squad has a distinct advantage with its potent passing attack.
“I feel confident,” Woodruff. “We’re going to spread them out. They’ve been used to stopping the run, so they’re not going to be ready for our spread.”
Despite ending the regular season with the same record as it did last year, Woodruff said the comparisons between the two teams stop there.
“We’re definitely (playing) at a higher level than we were last year,” he said. “We’ve had a lot more success offensively this year. Our defense has struggled against a few teams, but we’ve had some close ones, some games that could have gone either way.”
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
