NATCHEZ — A Natchez man was arrested Tuesday for one of a rash of downtown burglaries that have occurred in the past two months.

Natchez Police Sgt. Jerry Ford said Dentrell D. Johnson, 22, 514 N. Martin Luther King Jr. St., was charged with burglary for a Dec. 16 burglary of a College Street house.

Ford said Johnson reportedly watched the resident of the house leave, broke into the house and was caught by the resident’s son who was in the house. The son was reportedly able to hold Johnson down and call police, but Johnson escaped when the son went outside to flag police down.

“The house wasn’t easily identified, and when the (officers) were trying to find it, he went outside to flag them down, and (Johnson) took off running,” Ford said. “It was a while before we could apprehend him again, but the son was able to identify him in a photo lineup.”

Johnson was being held in the Natchez City Jail Tuesday evening without a bond.

While police have only so far charged Johnson in the one burglary, he is a suspect in at least four other burglaries that occurred in November and December in the Pearl Street area of downtown, Ford said.

Anyone with information about the burglaries should contact Crime Stoppers at 601-442-5000.
