Historic week brings good news

As we look forward to a week forecasted to have partly cloudy skies and cooler temperatures, let us review some of the good news that happened in our community last week:
Natchez celebrated the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. with the annual “I Have Dream Luncheon” at the Natchez Convention Center. Several of the area’s most talented youth honored the occasion in song, dance, poetry and prose. The performances had those in attendance on their feet most of the day offering robust applause. The energy and spirit of the young presenters left little doubt that a new generation of leaders will continue to reach for the dream King described on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial 54 years ago.
Natchez native Jessie Winston said it took 106 years for him to get famous. Winston recently received the letter of a lifetime from former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama before the Obamas left the White House. The birthday greeting, which arrived a few days after Winston’s 106th birthday, was signed by the president and his wife.
Local residents traveled to Washington, D.C., to witness history being made when Donald Trump was inaugurated as the 45th president of the United States. Janet Sullivan, Nancy Hungerford and Sheri Rabb described the once-in-a-lifetime experience as awe-inspiring and one they will never forget.
Church and civic leaders from Natchez and Adams County explored ideas for helping the area’s troubled youth during a forum at the New Direction Worship Center in Natchez. The Rev. Kevin Deason invited the community to his church where leaders developed ways to address the area’s crime and violence problems. Thanks to all who came to begin a conversation about this important issue.
As we enter another week, let us be aware of those who are striving to improve our community.
