The Monterey High School boys basketball team received several penalties Wednesday from the LHSAA regarding an incident after the team left a game early on Feb. 7.
The LHSAA deemed Monterey violated rule 6.21.1 of the organization’s handbook, stating any school which removes a team from the playing floor in protest of an official’s decision before the completion of the contest shall be found in violation of the sportsmanship rule.
Under the sportsmanship violation, Monterey has been put on probation for one calendar year from the day of the incident.
Monterey coach Eric Richard must also sit out for the next varsity contest, which will be in a playoff game next week.
The Wolves are currently ranked No. 21 in the current LHSAA Class B power rankings.
Additionally, Richard must complete either an LHSAA Handbook Certification course or an online LHSAA Fundamentals of Coaching course before May 26, 2017.
