After serving seven years as the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball league secretary, Bridget Wactor is taking over as the league’s president to start the new season.
Despite the new role, Wactor said most everything in the league will remain the same.
“It’s just a title,” she said. “I’m still here, and I just want to keep (the league) going.”
Wactor and her husband, Tommy, had a daughter come up through Natchez-Adams Softball, which serves girls ages 3-18.
Even though their daughter is now grown, Wactor said she still enjoys helping the young girls.
“The best thing is that (the girls) get to mix and mingle with kids from different schools,” Wactor said. “I hope they learn about softball while making new friends. I want them to continue (with the league) when they grow up and bring their kids back to keep the cycle going.”
The league, which has been around for more than 50 years, has seen tremendous of growth and with more than 30 years of involvement under her belt, Wactor said she has seen the impact it can make within the community.
“I know every year when the season starts, all the girls are excited to see the ones who they played with last year,” she said.
Natchez-Adams softball is helping girls off the field as well.
At the end of each season, the Riana Flynn scholarship is given to a graduating senior to help with college expenses.
Flynn, who was a member of the league, was involved in a fatal car accident in 2002, and Wactor said it’s nice to see her importance live on each year.
“We keep it a secret until the end,” Wactor said. “(Flynn) was an all-around athlete and everyone looks forward to seeing who gets (the scholarship.) It makes me happy to see them receive it.”
Registration to play in this year’s league is already underway. Interested players can pick up and turn in forms at Sports Center in Natchez before March 11.
The cost is $60 for the first child and $55 for each additional child.
Tryouts will take place on March 18 at the Natchez-Adams Girls Softball Complex, and the season will begin on March 24.
