Many athletes would give everything they had to play just one more game, and Cathedral High School’s Frederick Sanguinetti and Adam County Christian School’s Kyle Williams are getting to do just that.

The senior duo will join more than 40 players from around the state Thursday in the MAIS All-Star soccer game at Jackson Prep.

“It’s a big deal to me,” Williams said. “To be out there with the best of the best is really awesome, and I’m very excited.”

Williams had been playing for the Rebels since the fifth grade, and was highlighted as a striker and midfielder during his final year. He led ACCS to a 17-3 overall record, including its two season-victories over the Green Wave.

Although Williams added an impressive 24 goals as a captain for the Rebels, they ultimately fell to St. Aloysius in the first round of playoffs, 4-1.

“I thought St. Al would be my last game,” Williams said. “The next day at school I got an email about being selected to the all-star game, and I went crazy. It’s overwhelming. I really wasn’t expecting it.”

Sanguinetti led the Green Wave to a 10-8 record this season, good for the No. 3 finish in the district. The senior midfielder got his start at Cathedral during his freshman year and climbed his way up to also star as a captain.

Sanguinetti said that although he and Williams have been rivals up until this point, he is ready to finally share their talents with one another.

“I’m happy to be able to play next to him because Kyle is a really good player,” he said. “This means all the hard work and dedication that I put in is finally being recognized.”

For his second all-star appearance, ACCS coach Jim Bob Allgood will represent the South region as a co-coach for the Blue Team.

Allgood said while there is a lot of talent to choose from, he knew exactly where to start looking for his 22-player roster.

“These two were the first two that I picked,” he said. “It has been a pleasure to see the level that they play at.”

While the game isn’t for any kind of championship trophy, Allgood isn’t taking the coaching task lightly.

“The team (Williams and Sanguinetti) will be a part of is a bunch of magical kids,” he said. “It is going to be a treat for them, and they are both going to shine during the game. There is no doubt in my mind.”

The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
