Lady Vikings shut out Avoyelles, 15-0

Vidalia High School’s Sara Cockerham allowed just one hit Friday night as the Lady Vikings coasted to a three-inning shutout over Avoyelles, 15-0.

Cockerham struck out seven, and Vidalia recorded hits from eight different players in the win.

“Sara did a really good job,” VHS coach Forrest Foster said. “I was proud to see it. These girls fight hard.”

Cockerham also registered a hit and scored three runs.

“Everyone worked really well together,” she said. “It was a good team win.”

After a 10-run first inning and a commanding lead by the end of the second, 14-0, Foster took out his starters. He said it is always important to let the younger players receive some playing time.

“I’m not out here to please anybody,” Foster said. “I’m here to win games, so when you have a game like that where you can play everybody, it makes you happy. I love my kids and want them all to play.”

Senior Katlyn McCarver led the Lady Vikings, going 2-2 with four RBIs and one run scored. McCarver’s efforts were highlighted by a two-run double to center field in the second inning.

Tiffany Brewer aided the in the scoring barrage, finishing 2-2 and adding two RBIs and three runs of her own.

Also recording hits in the win were Shelbi Cross, Skylar Adams, Madison Johnston, Shelbie Vinet and Macie Seyfarth.

Vidalia (9-7, 4-1) will be back in action at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday against Jena at home.
