The Block High School Bears almost pulled off another upset in the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs, but the Oberlin High School Tigers scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for a 20-13 win Thursday afternoon in the quarterfinals.
Block, the No. 16 seed, fell behind 12-1 after four innings of play before scoring eight runs in the top of the fifth inning and two more in the top of the sixth to make it a 13-11 game before Oberlin, the No. 9 seed, responded in the bottom of the sixth.
“Oberlin was a pretty good team. The pitcher they threw was curveballs. We struggled early,” Bears head coach Stevie McCarthy said. “I met them in the huddle and told them to lay off the curveball and hit the fastball.”
With one out in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears booted what should have been an inning-ending double play and the Tigers took advantage of the error to eventually take a 20-11 lead.
Block (12-15) scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but it would not be enough.
Brennan Lippman was charged with the loss after allowing 13 runs, none of them earned, on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk in three and one-third innings. He went 3-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBIs.
Five addtional Block players had a registered hit on the night.
“We left the bases loaded once and five more stranded,” McCarthy said. “They played their hearts out for me. I’m proud of them. I told them in the huddle that everybody will be back next year.”
Tyler Alexander was the winning pitcher after allowing 13 runs, only one earned, on eight hits with three strikeouts and just one walk in a complete-game effort.
