DCS set to travel to LaSalle in quarterfinals, face familiar team

Delta Charter School will continue its baseball postseason run with familiar opponents, but this time on the road.

The fifth-ranked Storm (15-11) is set to travel to No. 4 LaSalle in the third round of LHSAA Class 1A playoffs at 5:30 p.m. today.

“We have got our hands full with LaSalle and we know that,” DCS coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said. “We like to be at home, but there is nothing you can do about it. You do have to beat teams on the road sometimes, and good teams are able to find ways.”

Delta Charter defeated LaSalle already once this season in an early-April game, 9-3.

The Storm faced a familiar scenario in their second-round matchup with district rival Beekman Charter. After defeating Beekman Charter twice during the regular season, DCS avoided a late-game surge and defeated the Tigers once more, 13-8, to advance to the quarterfinals.

“We are not taking it lightly by any means,” Hoffpauir said. “A win earlier in the year doesn’t mean much. All of that is over with. We are just going to go down there and play well and see what happens.”

Hoffpauir said while this is the first year for Delta Charter to be eligible for postseason play, his players have responded well to game situations.

“We’ve won some big games on the road this year,” he said. “To be new to this whole

process, we seem to be pretty relaxed. They are fired up and are ready to play.”

In its second-round victory, the Storm pounded out 14 hits, including a two-run homer from senior pitcher Lee Lancaster.

Hoffpauir said in order to keep the momentum going, his team will have to remain attentive at the plate.

“They have one pretty solid arm, and their relief guys are not too bad, either,” he said. “The biggest thing is to just stay patient at the plate and get some pitches we can hit and not try to do too much. We can be a pretty good hitting team and do some damage if we do that.”

LaSalle is coming off an 11-0 shutout over East Iberville in the second round after receiving a first-round bye.

“There is not a whole lot more practicing you can do,” Hoffpauir said. “I think if we play good baseball, we will be fine. If not, they are going to beat us, but in the quarterfinals that’s supposed to happen.”
