Good news alive in heat, humidity

As the summer’s heat and humidity settle in for the long haul, let us take a look at some of the accomplishments from last week:
- The Downtown Natchez Farmers Market opened Saturday with a crowd of shoppers waiting to peruse and purchase locally grown produce and handcrafted items from more than 33 vendors. A portion of South Commerce Street between Main and State streets was blocked off from 8 a.m. to noon for the market’s debut. For most of the morning, a steady flow of residents and tourists shopped for fruits, vegetables, milk, cheeses, baked goods, jewelry, artwork and other items. City officials and local organizers say Saturday was a success — one they hope will continue every Saturday morning in the summer.
- Peyton Bell and her goats Vixen, Dazzler, Shiloh, Gretl and Sage know how to win awards. The Natchez 10-year old recently won numerous awards at the Mississippi Goat Association spring show in Raymond. Bell won the first-place showman award in her age group. Her goats also received many accolades from the judges in several categories. In the past year, Bell has also excelled at the Dixie Nationals and Mississippi State Fair in Jackson. Congratulations to Bell for her many awards.
- When Jeanie Peabody plays golf, she does not play for the competition. She plays for the fun and fellowship of the sport, which is why the hole-in-one shot the local golfer recently made is all the more enjoyable for Peabody and us all. Peabody said the rare shot was a fluke and did not involve much skill or strategy. Even still, we thank Peabody for sharing her moment of surprise and delight — something we need more of in our lives.
As we seek to find similar moments of joy in the world, let us remember to thank those who continue to make our community great.
