James Lamar Spencer

NATCHEZ —  A memorial service for James Lamar Spencer, 91, of Natchez, who died Friday, Aug. 4, 2017, at his residence, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.

Mr. Spencer was born on Feb. 13, 1926 in Natchez, the son of Jesse L. and Guyola Spencer.

After graduating from Natchez High School, he enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. After his military service, he went to Mississippi Southern College before graduating from Louisiana State University in mechanical engineering in 1944. He worked for Armstrong Tire and Rubber Company before working for Carbon Carbide and Chemical Company in Oak Ridge, Tenn. He then went to work for Schlumberger, where he worked in South Louisiana and Southwest Mississippi until his retirement in 1986.

Mr. Spencer was an active and dedicated member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the Vestry for several terms and held the office of Junior Warden.

He enjoyed swimming with the senior citizens, fishing with his friend Carol and hunting at his club, Green Mountain Hunting Club and with his friends at Cedar Grove Hunting Club.

Mr. Spencer was preceded in death by his parents; wife Julia Carmen Spencer; one sister June Spencer Allen; special friend Carol Myers; two stepchildren, Walter Doughty Jr. and Carmen Doughty Pressgrove; and two step-grandchildren, Valerie Givens and Dawn Perry.

Survivors include one nephew, Woody Allen and wife, Sissy; one niece, Anne Allen Hash and friend Robert Ewing; one great nephew Spencer Allen; one great niece, Jennie Allen; step-grandchildren, Walt Doughty III, Darin Doughty and wife, Shannon, Tip Fore, Ginger Cavin and Missy Forman and husband, RT; and a number of close Spencer family cousins.

Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or a charity of your choice.
