Trash may be step toward consolidation

Could trash be the thing that unites our community, or more precisely trash collection?
Stranger things have happened, but we applaud early discussions between the Natchez mayor and board of aldermen and Adams County supervisors.
The two entities are working to find a way to get their trash collection contracts in sync with the ultimate goal of saving taxpayers money.
That’s smart.
The first we heard of the idea was a number of years ago when former supervisors S.E. “Spanky” Felter made the suggestion at a meeting. It was a common sense idea then and it still makes a bunch of sense now.
Ultimately, we’d love to see the city and county find a way to join forces on this and recycling to put less stuff in landfills and save residents money.
Finding ways for the city and county to work together makes all the sense in the world on trash collection and a number of other fronts.
Public works crews, law enforcement, accounting and payroll functions could easily be worked in tandem, but only if all the elected leaders involved realize their jobs are not to protect their own mini-fiefdoms but to represent the best interests of the community.
Working together works best for everyone. We have long been one community. It’s nice to see our leaders begin to see that and act upon it.
