Block, Sicily Island ousted in first round of playoffs

OBERLIN, La. — Block High School saw its season come to an end Friday night as the No. 22 seed Bears were defeated by the No. 11 Oberlin High School Tigers 40-20 in the first round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

Oberlin (7-4) went up 12-6 after one quarter of play before outscoring Block 28-8 over the next two quarters to put the game away despite giving up 335 yards of total offense to the Bears.

Zorian Bowie tried his best to help the Bears pull off the upset as he completed 13 of 30 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns to go with 48 yards rushing and one touchdown on 17 carries.

Tyreke Harbor had four catches for 102 yards and one touchdown. Bowie led Block’s defense with eight tackles and Casey Phipps added seven tackles.

Block finished its season with a 2-9 overall record.

Elton 44, Sicily Island 6

ELTON, La. — The Elton High School Indians scored 22 points in the first quarter and cruised to a 44-6 win over the Sicily Island High School Tigers Friday night in the first round of the LHSAA Class 1A Playoffs.

No. 9 seed Elton (7-3) scored two touchdowns in a span of just over four minutes to take a quick 14-0 lead. No. 24 Sicily Island scored a touchdown with 1:12 left in the first quarter to cut the lead to 14-6, but the Indians responded with a touchdown of their own just 20 seconds later to make it a 22-6 advantage.

The Indians cruised after that, scoring a touchdown in each of the final three quartes.

Sicily Island ended up with an overall record of 3-8.
