The Cathedral Lady Green Wave came out quick Tuesday night, leading to a 68-28 victory over St. Aloysius.

Despite a 23-2 lead by the end of the first quarter, Cathedral coach Peter Arnold said he wants his team to work on slowing its roll.

“We got off to a great start. We played great right off the bat, but you look at the shooting chart and there are empty Xs everywhere,” he said. “We get so jacked up and they are rushing. You have to be ready, but when you shoot you have to take your time.”

The Lady Green Wave (3-1) had a keen eye on loose balls ending with 14 steals as a team, but afterward Arnold noted the missed shots have been prevalent already this season.

“I thought our defensive intensity was good and that’s what I’m looking for, but that’s what we have done so far,” he said. “When they get (the ball) there is usually congestion, but they have to relax. They aren’t actually shooting it, they are just throwing it up there. It’s just something we have to work on.”

Arnold said while his team has room to improve, its speed should help Cathedral going forward.

Senior Caroline Kaiser notched nine steals in the win and also led the team in scoring with 11 points.

Ryleigh Probst followed closely scoring 10 points, with eight coming in the first quarter.

“Our biggest strength is our speed,” Arnold said.

With a 39-12 lead at halftime, the Lady Wave was able to back off of its pressured attack. It allowed all 14 of Cathedral’s active players to see game time. All but two scored.

“It’s OK if we get a rebound or a steal, but I’m not going to full-court press,” Arnold said. “It’s hard to tell them not to when I really want them to go faster. When you take away the things we really rely on, now we are just looking for loose balls. You lose some of your identity and what we are really focusing on.”

Overall, Arnold said he was pleased with the progress so far this season.

Hailey Ellis added eight points, Abby Brandon had seven and Emma Whittington, Madeline Smith and Mary Evans Kelley all finished with six for the Lady Wave.

“The good news is everybody got to play,” Arnold said. “We are just trying to get better, and we are every night.”

St. Aloysius 69, Cathedral 55

Cathedral’s J.T. Taylor scored 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as St. Aloysius pulled away in the second half for a 69-55 victory Tuesday night.

The Green Wave (1-2) held a 33-29 lead at halftime, yet gave up 21 points in the third quarter and another 19 in the fourth.

“Honestly, it came down to depth,” Cathedral coach Matthew Hall said. “We have nine guys on our team and two that can’t play for another three weeks or so.”

Despite the loss, Hall said he was happy with how his team utilized what it had.

“We were a little too aggressive early, but I thought they played well,” he said. “I’m proud of the effort.”

Moving forward, Hall said he is looking forward to continuing the season.

Ty Tobias added 13 points for the Green Wave.

“Being there for the guy next to you, that’s what we have to work on,” Hall said. “It’s early in the season, and so far they are a little better than I thought they would be.”
