Vidalia Vikings energized for second round contest

Dee Faircloth would rather the Vidalia High School Vikings be rowdy than still.

After an LHSAA Class 2A playoff win in the first round to DeQunicy last week, 56-14, Faircloth said his team benefited greatly from a jolt of energy.

“Our kids came out and focused and they got after it,” he said. “They answered the call and I couldn’t be prouder of them.

“Every ball club you coach is different, and this team gets up pretty good. It’s just the type of kids I have. They are excitable, they are easily motivated and they have the desire to go to the next round.”

Vidalia (9-2) will get its shot in the second round as it hosts No. 12 seed Northeast at 7 p.m. tonight.

The Vikings — ranked No. 5 — were led last week by a multitude of players.

Quarterback Tristan Weatherly threw for two touchdowns while rushing for another two. Devin Green and Cam’Ron Randall both rushed for two scores, while Randall also caught another.

“They have come a long way,” Faircloth said. “Nobody said we would win five games, but it’s all about experience. They are doing the right stuff at the right time. They have worked to get better, and they feed off of each other.”

Faircloth said Northeast (8-3) has just as many talented players.

“They are very athletic bunch,” he said. “It’s tough when you play pure athletes because you never know where they are going to be.

“It’s really big to be at home. They love to play at home. Last week our crowd was full, and I guarantee it’ll be more full this week.”

With elimination on the line from here on out, Faircloth said his players have taken a stand.

“We all said we don’t want to end our season Friday night,” he said. “We want to end our season in New Orleans.”
