Led by senior point guard Anasia Turner and senior post player Zhane Green, the Ferriday High School Lady Trojans took down the Mangham High School Lady Dragons 70-49 Tuesday night in their LHSAA District 2-2A opener.

Turner led all scorers with 31 points and Green finished with 20 points to lead Ferriday, which overcame several players being under the weather and turned up the pressure on Mangham after a back-and-forth first quarter.

“I have to really commend my team tonight. We had four players who have some kind of an illness, possibly the flu,” Lady Trojans head coach Lisa Abron said. “They were coughing and sneezing for most of the day. We didn’t know if they were going to play tonight. They all played with tremendous effort, despite not feeling well.”

Ferriday struggled defensively in the first quarter and trailed the Lady Dragons 19-18 at the end of the quarter. Then the Lady Trojans grabbed the momentum during the second quarter and went into halftime with a 33-30 lead.

“We made a few mistakes, but we played really good defense,” Abron said. “Our press was amazing. We were coming up with turnovers and making easy layups (off them). And we didn’t foul as much as we have been.”

The second half was all Lady Trojans. They outscored the Lady Dragons 20-9 in the third quarter for a commanding 53-39 lead and continued the drive in the fourth quarter.

T’aira Haynes led Mangham with 19 points while Janiya Colvin and Raci Dallas had 11 points each.

Ferriday (9-3, 1-0) plays host to Class 3A Richwood High School at 6 p.m. Friday.

Ferriday took a 14-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and then expanded its lead to seven points at halftime, 32-25. Mangham kept it close by outscoring the Trojans 15-12 in the third quarter to make it a 44-40 game in favor of the home team.
