Jacob McDaniel scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Adams County Christian School Rebels defeated the Silliman Institute Wildcats 11-10 Friday afternoon in an MAIS District 5-AAA game.
McDaniel led off the frame by being walked by eventual losing pitcher Myles Simmons. Then winning pitcher Josh Day doubled McDaniel over to third base. Jack Whitehead was intentionally walked to load the bases.
Brock Berthelot relieved Simmons and struck out Gage Dossett. Then Berthelot’s second pitch to Rhet McDonald ended up in the dirt and that allowed McDaniel to cross home plate.
“It was a really big win. We definitely had to win this one to stay in the hunt,” ACCS head coach Matthew Freeman said. While he was pleased to get the win, he added that he was frustrated in how the Rebels ended up winning the game.
“We were up 10-0 and then the wheels fell off. They got a bunch of base hits after base hits. But we figured out a way to win it,” he said.
ACCS scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning, four runs in the bottom of the second and one run in the bottom of the third. Silliman rallied to tie the game thanks to five runs in the top of the fifth inning and five more runs in the top of the seventh.
Day ended up going six and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs, only one earned, on eight hits with five strikeouts and five walks. Freeman took him out with the Rebels seemingly in control with the big lead. But he had to put him back in after Devin Grey and Andrew Porter struggled on the mound.
“Josh threw 75 pitches on Tuesday, so I knew he would be limited. Then when I put him back in, I challenged him and he came through for us,” Freeman said.
McDonald led the Rebels at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four runs batted in and two runs scored. Day went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.
ACCS (12-8, 1-2) doesn’t play again until 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 at Central Private School.
