Delta Charter School had plenty of offense to defeat St. Frederick High School in a pivotal LHSAA District 2-1A game that lasted about three hours Thursday afternoon — nine runs and 12 hits.
But it was the pitching and defense that let the Storm down as the Warriors used a pair of seven-run innings, including a key one in the top of the sixth inning, to escape with a 16-9 victory.
“We pitched well, played great defense and ran the bases well (in a 7-5 win at St. Frederick on Tuesday afternoon),” Delta Charter head coach Jarrett Hoffpauir said. “We didn’t do any those well today.”
St. Frederick scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and appeared to be in control with an 8-1 advantage in the top of the fourth. Then Delta Charter answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 8-8.
However, all the momentum went away when the Warriors used a seven-run rally in the top of the sixth to go up 15-8.
“We couldn’t get a stop on the mound,” Hoffpauir said. “We’ll learn from it and get better.”
Winning pitcher Jacob Mayo helped his cause by going 3-for-5 with two home runs and five runs batted in to lead St. Frederick’s 11-hit attack.
Freddie Mango was 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored while losing pitcher Drake Smith went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Andrew Brown went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Delta Charter (8-12, 4-4) steps out of district next Monday when it hosts Family Community Christian School at 5 p.m.
Vidalia 11, Mangham 1
MANGHAM, La. — Peyton Fort scattered eight hits and struck out 10 batters in a complete-game performance as the Vidalia High School Vikings defeated the Mangham High School Dragons 11-1 Thursday afternoon in an LHSAA District 2-2A game.
Peyton Fort kept Mangham off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning. He got plenty of run support early on as Vidalia scored one run in the top of the first inning and three runs in the top of the second.
The Vikings were up 7-0 before the Dragons were able to avoid being shut out. Vidalia added to its lead with one run in the top of the sixth and three runs in the top of the seventh.
Tristan Weatherly went 2-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored while Dominik Harveston was 2-for-3 with one run batted in and one run scored to lead the Vikings’ 11-hit barrage. Christian Fort was 2-for-4 with a double and one run scored.
Vidalia (17-9, 8-0) plays host to Mangham to close out the three-game set on Saturday at 4 p.m.
