NATCHEZ — The Natchez Police Department is investigating two shooting incidents in downtown Natchez Saturday night.
Officers responded to shots fired at the Natchez Community Center on Franklin Street shortly before 10:30 p.m. A wedding reception was reportedly under way in the center Saturday night.
At least two men were seen being handcuffed and taken away from the scene in police cars, though whether any arrests took place remains unclear.
Patricia Grey was attending a family reunion at The Natchez Grand Hotel, when she said she heard the shots ring out. Her husband, she said he thought they might be fireworks.
“I said, ‘Uh uh, those were shots,’” Grey said.
Grey said she heard multiple shots from the hotel, located nearby across Canal Street from the Natchez Convention Center.
Soon after, at approximately 11 p.m., more gunfire could be heard downtown. Shortly after, Police officers were investigating an incident near the corner of Abbott Street and St. Catherine Street.
Capt. Scott Frye said the gunshot victim told police he was walking down Abbott Street and was shot at, but did not see who the shooter was. The victim was seen being taken away in an ambulance.
Frye said the shooting included several rounds of gunfire.
Police continue to investigate the scene into early Sunday morning.
It is unclear if the two shooting incidents Saturday night are related.
